Council elections - get involved

Why you should stand for election to Council, and use your vote

During April to June each year, the IFoA’s Fellows and Associates are invited to put themselves forward to join our Council and to vote in the election for those positions.

By becoming a Council member, you can directly influence the IFoA’s future. Made up of 30 elected members, Council makes the major decisions for the profession: it determines the mission, vision and values of the IFoA, sets strategy and oversees its implementation, and decides on major changes of policy.

The window for submitting a nomination to stand for election to Council closes at 12:00 BST on Monday 25 April. With that impending deadline, and with the election commencing on 10 May, we asked some current Council members to tell us why every member should engage with this, whether by standing for election or by voting in the election.

Louise Pryor, President of the IFoA, said:

“As a Council member, you become much more involved in the IFoA. If you are looking to move your career on to the next level, it’s a great way of gaining board-level experience. It’s also one of the biggest contributions you can make to the ongoing success of the IFoA. Standing for election to join Council, or using your vote to choose candidates with the experience and qualities to guide the IFoA, is an important way that you can play a role in our mutual success.”

Matt Saker, President-elect, said:

“As we roll out our latest strategy and begin developing the strategy for 2024 onwards, the next few years are going to be key in shaping the future of the whole profession and anyone joining Council now will have an important role to play in making sure we are successful. If you want to be part of this exciting process, then I’d encourage you to take the plunge and put yourself forward for election. I’m confident that you’ll find the experience both challenging and rewarding. But if you’re not ready to take the plunge, then you still have an important role to play as a voting member of the profession. Each candidate has their particular perspectives and you need to use your vote to influence the make-up of Council, and help the IFoA better represent its members and serve society.”

Kalpana Shah, incoming President-elect

“As a member of the governing Council, you will be given a unique opportunity to represent your peers and bring about the changes you would like to see at the IFoA.”

Cynthia Yuan, Council member, said:

“As a member of the Council, I feel strongly about our profession offering a platform for actuaries who put the public interest as top priority and apply their skills responsibly. Council concerns itself with important issues such as international inclusion, professionalism, climate change and sustainability, and new skillsets for future actuaries. The reason I put myself forward to stand for Council three years ago was because I wanted to be involved in understanding and discussing these issues, which affect every one of us. And as a council member based in China, I also strongly believe it is important for all parties to be heard. We stand as one in shaping our future together.”
