Chartered Actuary: 2022 Member Vote

Members of the IFoA voted to adopt Chartered Actuary designations in a vote conducted online by Civica Election Services between 15 November and 13 December 2022. Voting is now closed. This page will be maintained to provide information on the new Chartered Actuary designations.

IFoA members voted 68.2% for proposals, 31.8% against. 6,438 members cast a vote – a record total for the IFoA.

This vote confirms the intention to adopt Chartered Actuary designations, but members do not have the right to use these designations until this is confirmed through formal approval from the UK’s Privy Council.

The IFoA will email all members directly to let you know when you are able to use Chartered Actuary designations and how to make the most of them.

Chartered status will:

  • protect the integrity of our qualifications and standards
  • elevate the status of our members
  • position the profession for a successful future

Fellow IFoA members will be designated Chartered Actuary (Fellow) – using the post-nominals:

  • FIA C.Act
  • FFA C.Act

Associate IFoA members will be designated Chartered Actuary (Associate) – using the post-nominals:

  • AIA C.Act
  • AFA C.Act

Members who prefer to do so will be able to keep using traditional designations of Fellow or Associate of the IFoA, with the post-nominals FIA/FFA or AIA/AFA.

"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet… except that in a modern world, there is huge value and cachet in a brand, in a unique mark. As a Royal Chartered professional body, we have a unique global opportunity to distinguish ourselves. ‘Chartered Actuary’ is reserved only for IFoA members. It can’t refer to a new graduate with an actuarial degree. It can’t refer to other qualifications or membership of any other bodies. Only IFoA members.

That brand is a mark of respect, an honour and a privilege. It is a covenant to provide diligence, skills, professionalism and the highest standards of ethics, in every piece of work. Choose to become Chartered."
