The Actuary magazine: Life Insurance Features Editor

Application closing date: 30 June

Do you follow the latest developments in the life practice area from around the globe? Are you interested in interviewing and interacting with researchers and leading figures in the global life insurance industry? Have you ever wondered how a magazine is put together and would enjoy finding out? If so, we’d love to hear from you.

The Actuary magazine is the leading publication for the actuarial profession and owned by the IFoA. It is seeking an enthusiastic member to join the editorial team as a Life Insurance Features Editor. If you’re a qualified actuary with relevant experience we’d love to hear from you.

In return for helping to produce our award-winning magazine, you’ll have the opportunity to broaden your knowledge about how the world works, meet interesting people with lots to say, attend fascinating events, and enhance your CV.

What is involved?

As a features editor you will:

  • explore, generate, and commission new ideas and topics for discussion and possible publication
  • propose and conduct interviews with thought leaders from within and beyond the actuarial community
  • provide input to the editor and wider editorial team on the relevance of articles submitted on life insurance themes, and whether they should be published
  • liaise with authors, the editor, and the publisher
  • write and edit articles so that they are accurate, accessible, informative, and appealing to The Actuary’s wide readership
  • be a point of contact for authors to submit articles in the life area
  • provide feedback to authors in the event that material is not suitable for publication
  • review the articles selected for print and provide feedback to the publisher on amendments
  • participate in monthly features meetings and contribute to discussions with the rest of the editorial team to help shape the content in The Actuary

You will also have the opportunity to network both within the actuarial profession and externally.

Time commitment

The role is flexible. You’ll need to make sure that you have enough time each month to work on several articles for the magazine. That includes contacting people, researching, checking, and editing. How you manage your time will be up to you. We ask that you attend the regular monthly features meeting, usually held on a Weekday at noon.

Who should apply

This role would be perfect for a Fellow qualified member of the IFoA who has a background in life insurance and works in a related field. A passion and interest in great communication is also a necessity.

Important attributes

You should also be someone who:

  • enjoys meeting and talking to thought leaders and gaining a wider perspective on issues that are of interest to actuaries
  • is interested in researching and developing new and topical content that may be of interest to actuaries in a changing global environment
  • enjoys reading and writing
  • enjoys working in a collaborative team and is open to feedback
  • is confident in proposing and exploring new avenues of interest for The Actuary
  • is able to work independently and to deadlines, and is pro-active, organised, and flexible
  • has an excellent command of the English language
