LGBTQ+ Insurance Implications Working Party – members

Application closing date: 30 June

We are seeking volunteers to join our newly formed working party looking at insurance implications for LGBTQ+ customers.

The working party has identified 3 key focus areas it wishes to explore with the help of working party volunteers. These are:

  • advertising: for example, improving LGBTQ+ representation in insurance advertising
  • customer services experience: for example, improving LGBTQ+ customers’ experience when dealing with customer services agents
  • pricing and product design: for example, investigating claims of inequitable insurance policies for trans individuals and understanding the insurance terms and conditions for customers with HIV

As the focus areas will touch on areas of insurance outside of pure actuarial work, we would be thrilled to welcome volunteers from outside of the actuarial profession. This includes but is not restricted to underwriters, brokers, marketers, customer service agents, product design specialists, claims handlers, and other related professionals who would like to contribute to the focus areas.

We have 3 founding members of the working party. They are passionate individuals who wish to improve the lives of LGBTQ+ customers in the UK and further afield. If you are equally passionate about improving the lives of LGBTQ+ customers, we would be delighted to hear from you.

The current focus of the working party will not look at LGBTQ+ pensions implications. However, the working party will host a shadow member of the IFoA Pensions Board. Should any pensions issues arise as part of our work, these can be relayed to the relevant IFoA team.

In addition to the 3 founding members, we are seeking 7 additional volunteers, creating a working party of 10 individuals in total.

What we are looking for from volunteers

LGBTQ+ lived experience is not required, but we welcome and encourage applications from all groups and backgrounds.

Knowledge of either the life insurance or general insurance industry is essential.

We are seeking individuals who will demonstrate curiosity, a willingness to volunteer to lead areas of work, and to own and drive agreed actions to completion.

Time commitment

The time commitment can vary by individual depending on the level of engagement you wish to make. However, a few hours a month (as a minimum) are expected to help advance agreed actions.

Working party meetings will be held at a minimum of once a month, with possible additional ad-hoc meetings to advance agreed actions. Please make every effort to attend these meetings and where this is not possible, please provide an update on any allocated actions.

We expect the initial period of working party activity to be 2 years, with checkpoints to be held during this period to discuss any possible changes to scope as our work evolves.

Should your circumstances change during the initial 2-year period, and you wish to step away, this is completely fine. Please let us know at your earliest convenience. All we request is during your period in the working party, you demonstrate commitment to completing agreed actions.
