Due to increased regulatory inquiry, many firms are assessing their organisational risk culture to ensure it is positive. The session proposes an effective risk culture framework that rewards individuals and groups for taking informed risks.

Athina is a Senior Manager within Grant Thornton’s actuarial and risk practice, supporting existing and prospective clients across the UK enhancing their risk management capabilities.

Athina has a strong and analytical mindset supplemented by methodical thinking, delivering effective results. She has a sound understanding of risk management and Solvency II capital modelling obtained through her consulting experience and enhanced via exposure to different departments throughout the insurance industry.

During her time at Grant Thornton, she has assisted clients on improving their risk culture across the organisation. Also, she has been involved in projects supporting clients on revamping their risk management framework, including improvements on their risk assessment methodology, enhancing their emerging risk framework, and their risk management information pack.

Klaas is a Director within Grant Thornton’s actuarial and risk practice, where he leads the risk advisory team. His team delivers core risk management services to existing and prospective clients across the UK. Klaas has 25 years’ international financial services experience, discharging senior leadership roles such as Chief Risk Officer, Head of Internal Audit, Regulations and Solvency Manager, and IFRS 17 Director.

Klaas has experience in the investment management, life insurance, and non-life insurance markets, including insurance brokers.

In his current role Klaas leads a team of risk professionals that provide risk advisory services to large multinational life insurers and insurance brokers, large UK general insurers, the Lloyd’s of London market, and medium sized insurers. The key areas of risk focus in the market where services are delivered includes risk management in:

  • risk management and internal control frameworks
  • risk culture
  • actuarial and risk focussed regulatory reviews such as PRA commissioned Section 166 reviews
  • internal control and process mapping
  • solvent exit planning
  • general financial and non-financial risk support to risk management teams in insurers

Aboobaker is an Associate Director within Grant Thornton’s actuarial and risk practice, delivering core risk management services to existing and prospective clients across the UK. He has worked through numerous roles, supporting the risk and capital management activities across UK and international operations for life and non-life insurance companies, which include Bermuda reinsurers and Lloyd’s syndicates. Aboobaker’s international exposure continues to help clients develop harmonisation and consistency across regulatory and internal requirements within core risk management activities.

Aboobaker’s recent experience working with clients at Grant Thornton comprises:

  • acting as Head of Risk, developing ESG/sustainability frameworks
  • operational resilience assessments
  • acting SME for risk assurance reviews and risk culture reviews
  • section 166 review projects across multiple clients within the risk management space

In general, Aboobaker has a track record in bridging the gap between risk and capital management and actuarial functions. He has over 20 years of insurance risk management experience.

Prior to joining Grant Thornton, Aboobaker was appointed Executive Director of a global general insurance firm. His role involved the oversight of governance frameworks covering and risk culture management.
