The competition: what’s on offer

The competition is designed to broaden your understanding of the industry, enhance your critical thinking abilities, and develop your problem-solving skills in the workplace.

In return, you will have the opportunity to interview for the ultimate prize: a summer internship with Aon.

Throughout the competition, you will gain valuable mentoring from experienced professionals at Aon. You will also gain valuable insight and expertise to enhance your employability, making you more competitive, adaptable, and well-equipped to excel in a career in pensions.

“The pensions industry is a key part of the financial services sector and plays a huge part in enhancing people’s standard of living in later life. I know that actuaries are central to this and there is always the opportunity to contribute positively, both now and in the future.

Enhancing pension scheme member support, choice, and outcomes is a large growth area and I see it as the future of pensions. I am really excited to see even more innovation in the retirement industry, as well as the impact that the actuarial mindset and skills will have on future generations.

The future is bright for up and coming pensions actuaries!”

Competition journey

There are 4 stages: competition entry, mentoring and support, a discovery day at Aon to prepare for the final, and the final itself.

1. Competition entry

To get started with the competition, please submit a 200 word response to the following question:

‘What do you think is biggest challenge facing pensions today?’

“The thing I enjoy most about working in pensions is the variety.” Sakshi Kabra, Associate Consultant

2. Mentoring and support

You will be placed in teams of 4 to 5 people on ‘Question TBC’. Teams will then be invited to a virtual welcome half day. Here you will have the opportunity to meet your mentor, get to know your team, and learn more about the question.

You will then work as a team on presentations and solutions based on work assigned by your Aon mentor. You will be offered weekly calls with your mentor to support you during the 4 week duration of this task.

Successful groups will then be shortlisted to take part in a discovery day with Aon.

3. Discovery day

Aon will run an in-person half day session at the flagship London offices for the successful teams to prepare them for the final.

4. The final

Shortlisted teams will be invited to present to Aon and the IFoA Pensions Board. A winning team will then be selected. This will be hosted at Staple Inn, London, the historical home of the actuarial profession.

The individuals from the winning team will then be given the opportunity to take part in a virtual 1 hour interview for a summer internship with Aon.

“The thing I enjoy most about working in pensions is the variety. I carry out a mix of work, from doing calculations and building models to drafting reports and managing projects.

I have the opportunity to attend and present at client meetings and I enjoy the consulting aspect as it provides a good balance to the technical work – and adds value to what I do.

I work on a range of clients. Each one faces different challenges, which has helped me learn a lot about the industry and expand my knowledge and skills.”
