A vacancy has arisen for two independent members to join the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ (IFoA’s) Technology Committee.
About the IFoA

The newly established Technology Committee plays a pivotal role in shaping the IFoA’s technology strategy and ensuring its successful implementation.
Purpose of the Technology Committee
The Technology Committee will provide:
- Strategic Oversight: Guiding the development and implementation of the IFoA’s Technology Strategy.
- Advisory Support: Advising the IFoA Board and Executive on technology innovation, member experience, cybersecurity, and operational efficiency.
- Monitoring and Review: Overseeing key technology-driven projects, service delivery, and cyber risk management.
The Committee meets four times a year (three virtual and one in-person in London), with additional meetings or activities by exception.
Role of Independent Members
Independent members will bring specialist expertise to support the IFoA in delivering its technology goals. This includes:
- Offering external perspectives and insights to enhance decision-making.
- Contributing to strategic discussions on technology and its role in improving member services.
- Advising on specific areas of expertise to strengthen the IFoA’s capabilities.
Key responsibilities
Advisory
- Guide the IFoA Board and Executive on developing a robust technology strategy, roadmap, and operating model.
- Provide input on prioritizing and evaluating new technology projects.
- Ensure technology initiatives align with enhancing the end-to-end digital experience for members.
- Advise on the effectiveness of cybersecurity policies and controls.
Oversight
- Review progress against the technology strategy, focusing on member experience.
- Monitor key operational metrics, including vendor performance and service-level agreements (SLAs).
- Oversee the planning and execution of technology-related projects and cyber maturity initiatives.
Specialist expertise areas
The IFoA is seeking two independent members, each bringing expertise in one or more of the following areas:
1. Technology delivery and innovation expertise
- Knowledge of emerging technologies and their application in member-focused organizations.
- Experience with digital transformation, SaaS-based solutions, and cloud technologies.
- Familiarity with .NET technology stacks and other relevant software platforms.
- Strong understanding of cybersecurity risks, trends, and mitigation strategies.
2. IT procurement expertise
- Proven experience in IT procurement, including vendor selection, contract negotiation, and cost optimization.
- Expertise in managing SaaS/cloud procurement, subscription models, and vendor relationships.
- A track record of developing procurement strategies aligned with organizational goals.
- Experience in ensuring value for money in technology investments.
Person specification
Candidates should ideally have:
- A strategic mindset and experience with governance in a nonprofit or professional body.
- Excellent communication and analytical skills.
- A collaborative approach to working with committees and diverse stakeholders.
- Familiarity with multi-agency or cross-departmental project delivery environments.
Additionally, candidates should demonstrate expertise in at least one of the specialist areas above.
Time commitment
Four days per year, including meeting preparation.
Remuneration
An honorarium of £600 (gross) per day is payable, plus travel expenses.
Tenure
Two-year term, with the possibility of extension for one additional term.
