13 January 2025
The IFoA has rejoined the Actuarial Association of Europe (AAE) mutual recognition agreement (MRA). The MRA provides an important benefit to IFoA Fellows who can apply to have their qualification recognised by other AAE member associations. We are committed to ensuring that our members’ qualifications are as portable as possible and this agreement provides our Fellows greater flexibility to work in more locations globally.
The IFoA is now also in a position to accept applications for qualification recognition from members of other AAE actuarial associations under the MRA.
This agreement further strengthens our relationship with the AAE and its members and ensures that we are part of the broader initiative of supporting, developing and growing the global actuarial profession.

The IFoA is a full member of the Actuarial Association of Europe (AAE). The AAE is an umbrella body which plays a key role in supporting and representing actuarial associations in Europe. The IFoA has rejoined the AAE mutual recognition agreement (MRA) and as of 1 January 2025, we will accept applications for qualification recognition under this agreement. This will also allow IFoA Fellows to apply for qualification recognition with other AAE member associations, which enhances the portability of IFoA Fellowship in Europe and provides members with greater flexibility to work in more locations around the world.
The IFoA and the AAE both made changes to our respective syllabuses, and as a result they were no longer aligned. We left the MRA so that we could work with the AAE to determine how to make the MRA work with these different syllabuses to ensure equivalency, and in a post-Brexit context.
The IFoA has, throughout this process, retained full membership of the AAE but withdrew from participation in the AAE MRA as of 15 October 2021.
The guidance produced by the AAE, which sits alongside the MRA and explains how the MRA is applied in practice, has been updated as a result of our discussions with the AAE.
We rejoined the MRA because it provides an important benefit to IFoA Fellows who can apply to have their qualification recognised by other AAE member associations. We are committed to ensuring that our members’ qualifications are as portable as possible, and this agreement provides IFoA Fellows with greater flexibility to work in more locations globally.
The IFoA is now also in a position to accept applications for qualification recognition from members of other AAE actuarial associations under the MRA.
The MRA also further strengthens our relationship with the AAE and its members and is strategically important, ensuring that the IFoA is part of the broader initiative of supporting, developing and growing the global actuarial profession.
