Actuarial Data Science Working Party – members

Application closing date: 30 May

The IFoA is seeking to appoint both members and suitably experienced non-members to join the Actuarial Data Science Working Party. This active and diverse, member-led working party has plans to create a practitioners guide/systematic review of artificial intelligence applications in actuarial science.

The scope of the working party is to:

  • establish concrete machine learning/artificial intelligence methods that benefit actuarial teams. The working party is currently exploring generative and foundational models for tabular data, as well as interpretable machine learning methods that may offer improved predictive performance over standard statistical approaches.
  • assess whether these techniques enhance data insights and predictive accuracy or introduce unnecessary complexity. Drawing on academic research and practical case studies, the group aims to identify meaningful applications for the actuarial profession. Our work includes producing open-source articles, code, conference presentations, and webinars to support broader understanding and adoption.

Time commitment

Meetings are generally held bi-weekly via video conferencing. Meetings will be arranged at a mutually convenient time for all involved. There will be no requirement for volunteers to meet in one place.

There is an expectation that working party members will undertake research between meetings and prepare for meetings, with a time commitment of up to 1 day per month.
