The undeniability of climate change stares us in our face. By all indications, we may well be on our way to breaching the 1.5C benchmark, with 2024 already the warmest year on record with global temperatures averaging 1.55C above the pre-industrial level [World Meteorological Organization]. Changing weather patterns, shifting micro-climates, frequent and more intense weather events have real costs in terms of lives and livelihoods.
It is clear that adaptation finance and nature restoration demand our immediate attention. But can the need for adaptation and nature restoration be addressed jointly? Recent research suggests that the answer is yes, Nature-based Solutions (NbS) can be a powerful tool in reducing disaster risk due to natural hazards. Ecosystem-based interventions—such as mountain forests, wetlands, and coastal systems such as mangroves and coral reefs—are among the most effective methods for hazard mitigation. For example, mangroves reduce property damage by over USD 65 billion annually [UNEP, GIZ].
