Pensions – Aging Populations Working Party – Deputy Chair and members

Application closing date: 20 April 2025

The IFoA is seeking to appoint both members and suitably experienced non-members to join the newly formed Aging Populations Working Party. The group will be dedicated to exploring the challenges and opportunities presented by aging populations. This initiative aims to leverage the collective expertise of the international actuarial community to address one of the most pressing global demographic trends: longer life expectancies combined with declining fertility rates. As these trends continue, they are placing unprecedented pressure on state support systems, retirement schemes, healthcare infrastructure, and insurance markets worldwide.

Objectives of the Working Party

The group will serve as a platform for actuaries across the globe to share insights, research, and best practices related to aging populations. Through collaborative exploration, the group seeks to identify actionable strategies and solutions for mitigating risks and enhancing opportunities arising from demographic changes.

Global Research

This is an area of interest for many countries, each at their own stage on the demographic journey, with different welfare systems and structures in place. The working party has an aim to investigate and compare the impact of aging populations globally, with a representative sample of countries picked from the different regions. The countries chosen could include, but is not limited to, India, Singapore, Japan, South Africa, Nigeria, the Nordics and mainland Europe. Later work could then expand on this further.

Opportunities for participation

This Working Party represents a unique opportunity to contribute to a critical global discussion. Actuaries are uniquely positioned to apply their technical skills and long-term perspective to a multi-faceted issue of global importance.
Participants will have the chance to:

  • contribute to ground-breaking research on aging populations
  • collaborate with international peers and other subject-matter experts
  •  influence the future direction of actuarial science in addressing societal challenges

We invite actuaries worldwide to join us in this endeavour to better understand and address the implications of aging populations. Together, we can ensure that actuarial science remains at the forefront of tackling one of the most significant global trends of our time.

Time commitment

The time commitment varies but will not be more than a maximum of 2 hours per month. The Working Party will convene regularly, with initial meetings focused on defining specific research areas, identifying potential collaborators, and outlining a roadmap for future work.
Members will be encouraged to share knowledge, present research, and engage in meaningful way to drive impactful outcomes.
