Sessional meeting: Diabetes ARC Project

Please note

In-person event with recording

Wed 18 Mar 2026 -
17:30 - 19:00 (GMT)

This research sought to update our understanding following improvements to treatment and deepen the understanding of the mortality risk associated with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, including relative risk in the presence of comorbidities.

Specifically, a model to provide mortality predictions at a granular level for lives with and without diabetes. The model is tailored for use by the insurance industry to provide an updated source from which to appreciate the risk posed when underwriting people with diabetes.

By providing an updated and deeper understanding of mortality risk, the research’s aim is to improve access to insurance for those individuals living with diabetes.

Featured speakers

Chair

Dr Bogdan Grechuk is the programme’s Principal Investigator. He is a member of the School of Mathematics and Actuarial Science at the University of Leicester, specialising in risk analysis and machine learning. He has led risk analysis research in several projects, including the recently funded Innovate UK KTP grant with TG0 Ltd.

In 2010, Dr Grechuk et al. developed a theory of generalized Chebyshev inequalities which can be used for robust estimation of the probabilities of rare events. In 2014, he developed with Zabarankin a novel theory for studying the risk of catastrophic events.

More recently, he participated in developing mathematical foundations for an error correction mechanism in data-driven artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Dr Grechuk has led undergraduate and MSc modules on the principles of actuarial modelling, with applications to mortality and morbidity modelling.

Scott Reid works for Zurich as Head of Experience Actuarial where he is responsible for building and rolling out a Zurich platform called Experience Insights, building data and modelling capabilities for the global Life Protection Unit.  This work is supported by a team of actuaries, actuarial analysts, data scientists and a project manager.

Scott is an active volunteer within the actuarial profession including Chair of the Health and Care Board, previous chair of the Health and Care Research Sub-committee, member of the ARC Diabetes Steering Group and chair of the FCA Task and Finish Group responding to the Pure Protection Review.  Previous has been involved in several working parties including diabetes, health and care stream of the Covid response and exploring the critical path.
