The IAA and AAE provide a forum for representing the views of actuaries to supranational institutions and other international entities. They help disseminate actuarial knowledge and expertise to these organisations, promoting sound decision-making on issues with global impact.
Our volunteers play a central role in our work with the IAA and AAE.
Membership of the IAA and AAE enables us to be at the forefront of thinking on how to respond to key challenges facing the global profession such as AI, sustainability and cyber security.

Membership fulfils our Royal Charter requirements to further actuarial science in the public interest. It ensures the IFoA is part of the broader initiative of supporting, developing and growing the global actuarial profession.

The IFoA has played a leading role in the development of the two associations. Chris Daykin CB was instrumental in setting up the International Forum of Actuarial Associations in 1995, becoming its president in 1996. The IFAA was incorporated into the International Actuarial Association in 1998. The IAA now has 74 full and 23 associate member associations.
Other IAA presidents included Edward Levay (2002), Paul Thornton (2010) and Charles Cowling (2024). Among his many achievements, Charles introduced the IAA AI Taskforce and oversaw the development of an IAA Climate and Sustainability Committee.
The IFoA was one of the founding members of the Groupe Consultatif Actuariel Européen, established in 1978 to provide advice and opinions to the EU institutions. Sir Brian Corby was the group’s first vice-chairperson and John Martin organised its first colloquium in London in 1980. John Martin went on to be its chairman in 1988 to 1991, followed by Peter Clark in 2000 to 2001. The IFoA, though John Henty, provided secretariat for 22 years. The name was changed to the Actuarial Association of Europe in 2014. The AAE currently has 38 member associations in 37 European countries.
In January 2025, the IFoA rejoined the AAE mutual recognition agreement. This enables IFoA Fellows to have their qualification recognised by other AAE member associations.
IFoA oversight of the relationship with the IAA and AAE is delegated to the Supranational Associations Liaison Sub-Committee (SALS). This comprises senior volunteers with considerable international experience, and senior executives with subject-relevant expertise. SALS considers and nominates IFoA delegates and formulates and recommends the IFoA’s position on IAA and AAE initiatives, votes and policy positions.
SALS reports to the Member Experience Committee. Executive support is provided by the IFoA’s Policy and Public Affairs Team.
SALS is currently chaired by IFoA Past President Kartina Tahir Thomson.
The IAA and AAE develop International Standards of Actuarial Practice (ISAPs) and European Standards of Actuarial Practice (ESAPs), respectively. Both are non-binding model standards of practice.
An International Actuarial Note (IAN) is an educational document that provides information on current or emerging practices in relation to an international actuarial topic. It serves to familiarise actuaries with approaches that might be taken and to demonstrate how the actuarial profession might approach the topic.
The AAE also issues European Actuarial Notes (EANs), together with statements of the due process for developing ESAPs and EANs, their purpose and criteria.
