The Actuary magazine – General Insurance Features Editor

Do you follow the latest developments around the globe in the general insurance actuarial arena? Are you interested in interviewing and interacting with researchers and leading figures in that space? Have you ever wondered how a magazine is put together and would enjoy finding out? 

The Actuary magazine, the UK-based, IFoA-owned leading publication for the actuarial profession, is seeking an enthusiastic member to join its editorial team as a General Insurance Features Editor. If you’re a qualified actuary with relevant experience, we’d love to hear from you.

In return for helping to produce our award-winning bimonthly magazine, you’ll have the opportunity to broaden your knowledge about all sorts, meet interesting people both inside and outside the profession, and network and enhance your CV.

What is involved?

As a Features Editor you will:

• Explore, generate and commission new ideas for possible publication
• Propose and conduct interviews with thought-leaders from both within and beyond the actuarial community
• Provide creative input to the editorial team
• Liaise with authors, the editor and the publisher
• Write and edit articles so that they are accurate, accessible, informative and appealing to 
  The Actuary’s wide global readership
• Be a point of contact for authors to submit ideas and articles on general insurance topics
• Provide feedback to authors in the event that material is not suitable for publication
• Review articles as part of the production process and provide feedback to the editor/publisher on amendments
• Participate in monthly features meetings and contribute to discussions with the rest of the editorial team to help shape the content of The Actuary magazine.

Time commitment

The role is flexible. You’ll need to make sure that you have enough time each month to work on a number of articles for the magazine (including contacting people, researching, checking, and editing) but how you manage your time will be up to you. We ask that you attend the hour-long features meeting each month if you can.

Who should apply

A qualified member of the IFoA who has a background and/or job in general insurance. A passion for effective communication and excellent writing skills are essential.

Important attributes

You should also be someone who:

• Enjoys meeting and talking to people, and gaining a wider perspective on issues that are of interest to actuaries
• Is keen on researching and developing new and topical content that may be of interest to actuaries in a changing global environment
• Enjoys reading and writing
• Enjoys working in a collaborative team and is open to feedback
• Is confident in proposing and exploring new avenues for The Actuary
• Is able to work independently and to deadlines, is proactive, organised and flexible
• Has an excellent command of the English language.
