Geopolitical Risk Task and Finish Group – members

Application closing date: 25 May

The IFoA is seeking to appoint both IFoA members and suitably experienced non-members to join the new Geopolitical Risk Task and Finish Group in the finance and investment practice area.

Background

The global order has shifted from relative co operation to an environment defined by growing confrontation and fragmentation. Geopolitical risks have always had the capacity to disrupt financial markets and the broader macroeconomic landscape. But today their likelihood of crystallising is materially higher, driven by heightened interstate tension, economic coercion and weakening multilateral structures. These risks now command far greater attention from governments and financial institutions, as their impacts are faster, more far reaching and more structurally significant than in past decades.

The Geopolitical Risk Task and Finish Group has been set up to provide actuaries working in the finance and investment practice area the opportunity to explore geopolitical risks relevant to their work, with a view to publishing a series of articles on specific risks for the benefit of the wider actuarial profession.

How it will work

Volunteers will write articles on a topic of their choosing. It is expected most volunteers will work independently, though authors could work together on an article if that is preferred. Volunteers may also be asked to peer review other articles produced by the group. How many articles volunteers write is up to them. Articles will be published in a series over a period of roughly 6 months.

The group will be administered by members of the Finance and Investment Research Sub-Committee.

They will support volunteers where required (for example, by liaising with the IFoA), ensure there is not significant overlap in topics, and help co-ordinate peer review.

It is not expected that group meetings will be held. Instead, volunteers will work directly with members of the sub-committee.

Task and person specification

Volunteers will:

  • Produce an article on a geopolitical risk topic relevant to the finance and investment practice area.
  • Work with members of the Finance and Investment Research Sub-Committee and the IFoA to publish their article.
  • Peer review articles produced by other members of the group.

There may also be opportunities to present their topic, for example on an IFoA webinar, if this would be of interest.

We are looking for volunteers who:

  • Have an interest in geopolitical risk and its implications for financial markets, investment strategy or macroeconomic conditions.
  • Have a clear idea of a topic they would like to write about or would be prepared to research a new topic (the sub-committee can provide ideas if needed).
  • Can write clearly and analyse complex issues.
  • Have good organisational skills and willingness to meet agreed timelines.

Time commitment

As the work will largely be done independently, there is no specific time commitment beyond what the volunteer is prepared to spend.
