Hosted by the IFoA General Insurance Asia Working Party along with guest speakers, this 2-hour webinar will give some research updates from the working party along with guest speakers to cover some key APAC non-life insurance topics—from pricing, regulation to Nat Cat.

Presentations include PV insurance risk modelling using machine learning, APAC solvency benchmarking, property Nat Cat pools, and Malaysian motor claims inflation. Gain practical insights from industry practitioners and academics on machine learning, regulatory trends, protection gaps, and emerging risks.

The webinar will also include a panel discussion on emerging risk and opportunities in the region.

Session 1: Research presentations

This session features 4 presentations delivered by guest speakers and the IFoA General Insurance Asia Working Party sub-stream research groups. Topics cover emerging risks, regulatory developments, and technical modelling in the APAC non-life insurance market:

  • Risk modelling for distributed PV insurance losses (co-presented by working party member Xiaoxuan Li and guest speaker Mr Yuning Jiang)
    A quantitative model using machine learning and deep learning to assess power generation losses in distributed photovoltaic (PV) systems, supporting risk pricing for PV insurance.
  • APAC solvency framework benchmarking (presented by working party members)
    A qualitative and quantitative comparison of selected APAC solvency regimes, highlighting structural differences, capital charges, and alignment with global standards.
  • Property Nat Cat pools in Asia (presented by working party members)
    A review of the protection gap in Asia and how Nat Cat pools are being developed to address it, with comparisons to global models and thoughts on the future landscape.
  • Malaysian motor claims inflation analysis (co-presented by working party members and guest speaker Dr Klaas Sijbrandij) 
    A joint study analysing frequency and severity trends using granular market data and machine learning, with insights into inflation drivers and reserving approaches.
