Booking exams

Once logged into your online account, you will be able to book an exam in the ‘My Exams’ section and then under ‘Book an exam’.

Please note that you will only be able to book session-based exams during the specified exam booking window.

Exam fees and other IFoA services are based on your eligibility for the reduced rate membership subscription. For the list of fees, please see our exam and other fees page.

You can find the dates for the April and September 2023 exam sessions on our exam dates page.

Please ensure that you have all the information you need, and you are using an up-to-date version of your internet browser.

We offer 2 payment options: credit or debit card and PayPal. If you have any issues paying with one option, we encourage you to try the other. UnionPay is accepted through PayPal.

International candidates paying by credit card, debit card, or PayPal should ensure that overseas transactions are enabled with their bank.

If you wish to pay by bank transfer, you must:

  • download and complete an exam entry form
  • send your completed form and confirmation of the completed bank transfer to our Member Services Team at memberservices@actuaries.org.uk

Yes, non-members can sit either the CM1 or CS1 exam without joining the IFoA as a student member.

To create an account and get an actuarial reference number (ARN), which you’ll need to book onto the exam, please complete the non-member registration form.

If you wish to sit an exam as a non-member, please do not submit a student admission application.

Exam bookings will be showing in the ‘My Account’ area of the IFoA website. Once logged in, please go to ‘My Exams’ and then ‘Review My Exam Bookings’.

You should log into your online account and book onto the stage 2 course. This will be in ‘My Exams’ and then ‘Book the Professional Skills Course’.

If you are unable to book the course, this is because you have not completed the Stage 1: Professionalism Course. You must first book and complete the stage 1 course before you are able to book the stage 2 course.

Once you are booked onto the stage 2 course you will be able to book an exam.

You should log onto your personal and professional development (PPD) record and check that you have met the minimum requirements of 3 PPD credits and 2 formal learning hours for your current recording year.

Getting refunded

If you cancel your exam booking prior to the registration period closing, you will be entitled to a refund of the exam fees you have paid for that exam. This is subject to a deduction of a 10% administrative charge and any applicable bank charges.

Cancelling after registration has closed

Cancellation after the exam registration period has closed will depend on the circumstances surrounding your request.

You should ensure that if you are eligible to apply for a refund, you do so within 15 days after the date of the exam has taken place.

Refunds will only be considered for extenuating circumstances (for example personal illness or close family bereavement) and supporting documentation is required.

Should a refund be approved, a 25% administrative fee will be deducted from the exam fee, along with any applicable bank charges.

No, refunds will only be made to the payer of the exam entry fee, using the same account details.
