Machine learning in mortality: highlights from the IFoA Longevity Bulletin

This webinar draws on the summer 2023 IFoA Longevity Bulletin, an issue based on Machine Learning applications in mortality and longevity work. The speakers comprise the editor of the Bulletin and the authors of two of the articles.

The agenda is:

  • an overview of the range of current machine learning (‘ML’) uses by life insurers in a biometric context
  • different types of ML techniques and their properties, with particular reference to mortality analyses
  • how ML applied to Electronic Health Records can yield valuable insights for actuaries and clinicians, with lessons also from analyses conducted during the pandemic.

Featured Speakers

John Ng is Director of Longevity Analytics at RGA, where he leads the global team responsible for longevity data analytics, tools and predictive modelling. He is a former chair of the IFoA Data Science Research Section and representative on the Data Analytics Forum of the International Actuarial Association.

Dan Ryan is Director of Demographic Risk for Just Group. He is a medical demographer with over 30 years of insurance experience, and most recently has been engaged in a DHealth based on improving hypertension management through applying ML to electronic health records.

Matthew Edwards is an experienced life actuary working as the innovation lead in WTW’s UKI life division. He has been at the forefront of introducing predictive analytics into life and pensions work, with particular regard to mortality modelling. More recently, he co-wrote WTW’s response to the Bank of England’s consultation on the use of AI in financial services. He has also been working on a range of insurance applications of GenerativeAI.

He is leading a small working group on the actuarial profession’s approach to GenerativeAI. He is a former Chair of the CMI, co-chair/co-founder of the COVID-19 Actuaries Response Group, and was elected to Council in 2023.
