If you are a member of another actuarial association which does not hold a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) and would like to join the IFoA as a Fellow or Associate, you can apply through our Individual Qualification recognition Route.
Who can apply?
If you are qualified as an Associate or Fellow with a recognised actuarial association you can apply for individual qualification recognition.
A recognised actuarial association is one that held full membership status of the International Actuarial Association at the time the individual qualified.
Application criteria
If you would like to apply for individual qualification recognition you will need to:
- demonstrate that once qualified and practicing, you have followed a programme of continuous professional development (CPD) and professional skills training,
- provide a written statement from your current actuarial association. confirming that you are a member in good standing (including a compliant CPD record) and that you have no adverse disciplinary findings against you, and
- provide a comprehensive, up-to-date CV.
The application criteria will be slightly different, depending on whether you qualified before or after 2005.
If you qualified after 2005, you will need to:
- map your qualification syllabus against that of the IFoA, and
- demonstrate a minimum of 3 years of work experience.
If you qualified before 2005, you will need to:
- be able to demonstrate employment in an actuarial or comparable role with a minimum of 3 years of work experience. This can be evidenced through references from your employer and checked by a Fellow of the IFoA (FIA).

How to apply
You will need to complete our individual qualification recognition application form and send your completed application form, along with the required documentary evidence to our Member Service team.
You can send us digital copies of your signed application form and relevant documents.

What if I do not meet the criteria for the individual qualification recognition route?
If you do not meet the criteria for individual qualification recognition, you could join the IFoA as a student and study to become an Associate or Fellow of the IFoA.
