Sustainability – Demographics: Mortality and Morbidity Working Party – members

Application closing date: 6 December

The Sustainability Board's Demographics: Mortality and Morbidity Working Party is seeking new members to contribute to the next phase of its research into the impact of climate change on mortality and morbidity risks. Both IFoA members and non-members are welcome to apply.

Building on its recently published practitioner survey in the British Actuarial Journal, the working party is now focusing on developing practical actuarial modelling approaches, worked examples and guidance to support the assessment and incorporation of climate-related mortality and morbidity risks into actuarial practice.

We welcome applications from individuals with varied practicing backgrounds, particularly across the life, health and pensions practice areas, as well as those with expertise or an interest in climate risk, sustainability, mortality and longevity modelling, climate scenario analysis, statistics and data science.

We are particularly interested in individuals who can contribute practical experience, technical expertise, research capabilities or relevant industry perspectives. We also encourage applications from individuals with a strong interest in this emerging area and a commitment to actively contributing to the working party's research, collaboration and thought leadership activities.

Objectives

The working party aims to advance the understanding, assessment and modelling of climate-related mortality and morbidity risks within UK actuarial practice, with particular emphasis on developing practical approaches and guidance for actuaries working across life insurance, health insurance and pensions.

Building on the findings of its practitioner survey, the working party will undertake research to:

  • Assess the implications of physical and transition climate risks for mortality and morbidity, including potential offsetting effects, adaptation and differences across demographic and socioeconomic groups.

  • Review relevant climate-health evidence, data sources and modelling approaches, identifying their suitability, limitations and implications for actuarial applications.

  • Develop practical frameworks for translating climate-related risks and scenarios into mortality and morbidity assumptions and projections.

  • Explore how population-level climate-health impacts can be reflected in insured populations, pension schemes and insurance portfolios.

  • Produce illustrative worked examples and methodological guidance to support actuaries in incorporating climate-related risks into assumption-setting, modelling and risk management.

  • Promote collaboration, knowledge sharing and thought leadership across the actuarial profession and relevant external stakeholders.
