The IFoA has around 3,000 members who belong to the finance and investment practice area.

We actively support members who are involved in finance and investment by:

  • providing relevant information on industry and regulatory developments
  • influencing local and international policy, for example by responding to consultations
  • promoting and supporting cutting edge research
  • providing CPD opportunities
  • shaping the investment related exam material to be up-to-date and relevant to members and their employers

Finance and Investment Board

The Finance and Investment Board is member-led by senior volunteer actuaries and advises the IFoA on important finance and investment issues. It is a source of expertise within the profession on matters relating to the finance and investment practice area and also supports and promotes the interests of practice area members in accordance with the IFoA’s strategic objectives.

The board supports the IFoA’s Council in the delivery of our strategy. It operates within a terms of reference.

Membership is drawn from a broad cross-section of the finance and investment community to ensure full coverage of all finance and investment related issues.

Specialist sub-committees

The Finance and Investment Board sets key objectives annually for, has oversight of, and is supported by the: 

  • Finance and Investment Lifelong Learning Sub-committee
  • Finance and Investment Research Sub-committee
  • Finance and Investment Global Sub-committee

These subcommittees:

  • address developments in finance and investment practice area relating to the syllabus and education needs of members
  • address CPD and conference programme content and planning
  • identify, promote, and foster research opportunities
  • focus on existing and emerging area of actuarial applications pertaining to finance and investment across the world
  • enable members across different geographies to participate and provide feedback on various issues pertaining to members

The Finance and Investment Lifelong Learning Sub-committee ensures that education and CPD requirements are coordinated and developed for all members in the finance and investment community.

Objectives

  • provide CPD opportunities that meet the needs of members
  • manage the development of the programme for the practice area annual residential conference
  • provide input into the exam syllabus and monitor education needs and developments in the finance and investment practice area
  • foster a sense of community amongst members in the finance and investment practice area

Terms of reference

The Finance and Investment Life Long Learning sub-committee operates within a terms of reference (58.3 KB PDF). It supports the IFoA’s Council in the delivery of its corporate strategy.

The Finance and Investment Research Sub-committee stimulates the advancement of actuarial science and provides a focal point for research in the practice area, which includes developing cross practice initiatives.

Objectives

  • identify, promote and foster research opportunities, including:
    • oversight and guidance of member-led research initiatives, in accordance with the guidance for new working parties
      • working with the executive’s research team to:
      • establish links with universities and external research bodies
      • identify topics/areas for commissioned research
      • review and evaluation of commissioned research
      • identify topics for the sessional research programme and source volunteers to peer review papers and chair events
  • support annual conference programme development and content
  • maintain a watching brief on the progress of and needs of existing member-led working parties
  • ensure actuarial science is interpreted as widely as needed to reflect the cross-practice nature of finance and investment
  • support the Research and Thought Leadership Board
  • provide input into the exam syllabus and monitor education needs and developments in the finance and investment practice area

The sub-committee operates within a terms of reference and supports the IFoA’s Council in the delivery of its corporate strategy.

The Finance and Investment Global Sub-committee stimulates the advancement of actuarial science and provides a focal point for global members working in the finance and investment practice area. This sub-committee is keen to encourage active participation of the membership from across our global community to contribute and provide advice to the Finance and Investment Board in order to advance its international strategy.

Objectives

The sub-committee will focus on existing and emerging areas of actuarial applications pertaining to finance and investment across the world. This includes, but is not limited to, banking, stock market, hedge funds, corporate finance, venture capital, alternate assets, and any other areas wherever the actuaries and actuarial students are working across the global regions.
